SCCA Chattanooga Region
Minutes from November 15, 2005 Meeting

 Present:            16 members

 BUSINESS:

 1)         Minutes from October 18, 2005 were approved.

 2)         Treasurer’s Report.  Art stated that after all but two or three small expenses were paid, the Region has approximately $4,000 in the bank for October.

 Committee Reports:

 3)         Track Trials:  Bill Perry stated that the Region lost less than expected; $1077 for the Nashville Superspeedway event as opposed to the $1500 estimate previously thought.  The event was a spectacular success; the track was pleased, and the event was the talk of the next event at Savannah.  Next year’s proposed date is October 14-15, 2006, with the following weekend currently being open on the track calendar.  The Region will need to submit a $1,000 deposit in the near future.

Bill said there needs to be another Organizer (maybe Carl Blevins?) chosen for the event as he has taken on the job of Steward for the Pro IT Series.

The fund raiser topped out at $740 for T.C. Thompson’s Children’s Hospital.  Jamie Hamilton is currently purchasing toys for the hospital and will notify the Region when delivery will take place.  The suggestion of “race cars” delivering the toys for a photo op was made.  When plans for delivery are known, more details will be firmed up.

 4)         Solo II Site Search:  No updates.

 5)         RallyCross:  At first look, it seems all December weekends are taken with events, but David Brooks will look at the schedule again and let us know.

 6)         Road Rally:  No update.

 7)         Road Racing:  Our Region was well represented at the ARRC held on Nov. 11-13 at Road Atlanta.  Chuck Fullgraf wrote a great race report – check it out under Road Race!  It sounds like Bill Perry had his hands full with WORK during the event, while Gail Perry, Jamie Hamilton, Ruth Cartlidge, and Teresa Silegren were support, crew, and cheering section.

Carl Blevins (ITC) 9th in class
Chuck Fullgraf (ITC) 10th in class

1) Minutes from September 13, 2005 were approved.

Committee Reports:

3) Solo II Site Search: Gerald Street has been in contact with Jimmy Jones of Chattanooga State. Jimmy runs the Motorsports Club that has begun and wants to work with the Chattanooga Region in setting up autocrosses (2 per year now), and have the club be an integral part of the Motorsports Club.

4) RallyCross: David Brooks was not in attendance, but Bill said the rally was great with 18 entries. There will probably be a Ho-Ho RallyCross, but no date has been set yet. (Great photos on the website!)

5) Road Rally: No update.

6) Road Racing: Art Thompson said that we were represented at the SIC held October 8-9, by Vesa Silegren (First Place!!!), Efren Ormaza (flywheel broke around the 15th lap knocking him out of his championship), Anthony Henderson (broke in qualifying), Rusty White (5th in class) and Michael Hartsberger (DNF’d).

The next events are at VIR, the 2006 SARC, 2005 Enduro, ECR, and 2005 Carolina Challenge on Oct. 29-30, and at Road Atlanta, the ARRC on Nov. 11-13.

7) Treasurer’s Report. Art Thompson passed out both August and September’s reports. September’s report does not reflect the $530 proceeds from the RallyCross or the unposted entry fees for the Time Trials next week. The deposit of over $6500 will be made after the race. Art has made a personal loan to the Club in the meantime to cover pre-event expenditures.

SCCA Chattanooga Region
Minutes from September 13, 2005 Meeting

Present:            8 members

BUSINESS:

1)         Minutes from August 16, 2005 were approved..

2)         Treasurer’s Report.  Art Thompson was not able to attend the meeting, but did send an email saying “we’re financially solvent”.  Will Perry gave Gerald Street an envelope with both Nashville Super Speedway deposits and transponder rental deposits.  Gerald will give the envelope to Art.

Committee Reports:

3)         Track Trials:  The Perrys are out of town, consequently, there is no update on the Nashville event.  At last known count, there are at least 16 entries for the event.

4)         RallyCross:  David Brooks was not in attendance.  The event apparently went well and enjoyed by all.  The club appears to have a long-term agreement with the landowners.

5)         Solo II Site Search:  No update.

  • Scott Dobler gave a report on Jennifer’s re-entry into the Solo II competitive world.  She attended the Solo II driving school in Atlanta, and ran 1st in class.  Jennifer and Scott then attended the Nashville Divisionals where Jennifer gave Amy Wagner a good neck-and-neck run until Amy, in her final run, edged out Jennifer.  Congrats to both!  Scott took 7th and says he has to learn to run faster.

  • Scott gave an update on Nationals – Brian Flanagan and Cliff Rosenberg are running DSP, Heyward Wagner and Mitchel Wagner in STS; and Josh Morgan in STX.  We’ll find out the results at our next meeting or earlier if a report is put on the website.

  • Pro Solo – Brian and Cliff took 5th and 6th in class.

6)         Road Racing:  No update.

7)         Old Business:  None.

8)         New Business:

  • Gerald Street said emails have been sent to all SCCA chapters and divisions regarding donating to the Red Cross.  The amounts in surrounding areas seem to be $500 or $1,000 per chapter.  It was decided that Gerald would send a ‘thanks, but no thanks’ reply, as members have already been donating on their own and the club does not have any excess funds to contribute.

  • Scott Dobler suggested a club Social Day at Dyno4ance in Calhoun.  Scott said that for $85.00, they put his car on the dyno machine four times in 1 ½ hours, and put on a great show as well.  He will check into dates for the club and then see what kind of interest we can get for a social.

9)         Date and location of next meeting:  7 PM Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at Komatsu.  Location may be changed – will update the website and notify by email.

BUSINESS:

David Brooks moved and Gail Perry seconded that the July Treasurer’s Report be approved as given. Motion carried.

Committee Reports:

3) Track Trials: Bill Perry updated the group on Nashville’s Super Speedway event. The Region has received three entrants via website on its’ first day of accepting entries. The entry list will list who his/her own transponder and the 54 transponders the club has purchased are available on a first come/first serve basis.

Bill has posted on 16 regions forums and is planning on accessing 12 more with mailings in a 500-600 mile radius.

4) RallyCross: David Brooks said the event was a rousing success (NO DUST and made a profit) with 19 entrants from as far away as Florida, Mississippi, Birmingham, Nashville and Atlanta. We had 3 new attendees from Chattanooga.

There is a strong push to put together programs in Florida and Atlanta, among others and David said at the Mid-Year SEDIV meeting there was discussion regarding the RallyCross program and its requirements. He said the number of classes will be lessened, the program simplified, and there will be a divisional championship.

David said the next event will be early November and probably will be called “Cindy’s Fall Frolic.”

5) Solo II Site Search: Bill Perry has spoken with Jim Kennedy of Kenco and might have some headway with Southern Railway. Minutes from July 19, 2005 Meeting

 Present:            16 members and visitors.

 BUSINESS:

 1)         June Minutes were approved as presented.

 2)         Treasurer’s Report.  Art Thompson provided a June Treasurer’s Report.  He stated the Region made some money in June.  Also the Rally X Sanc & Ins cost of $268.00 was for two months of fees.

 Committee Reports:

 3)         Track Trials:  Bill Perry indicated plans are proceeding well with the event and we still need workers.  The Perrys were at the Indy race in Nashville last weekend and took photos of Danica Patrick’s car in the garage paddock.  Bill thought there might be some fund-raising value as well as interest peaked from this.  After discussion, it was agreed there would be a silent auction on the website with the winner pitting his car in the Danica spot and proceeds going to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital.

Heyward Wagner will contact Nashville Region for potential workers for the event.

After discussion, it was decided to add the October event to the 2006 calendar now.

There will be an Aug. 6-7 Kershaw Time Trials event for the Central Carolina Region if anyone is interested.

 4)         RallyCross:  David Brooks was not at the meeting.  Gerald Street said the date of the event is changed to SUNDAY, August 14 at the owner’s request as he wants to cook for the racers.  He has already offered the use of his house for restroom purposes and the grill on his back porch.  His house is for sale and a sale is pending.

 5)         Solo II Site Search:

Scott Dobler has strong contact with the Walker County Chamber of Commerce’s President and so if we find a location in Walker County, we should have no difficulty in getting the site.

Gerald is contacting Dan Coulter, the property manager of the America’s Thrift Store’s Lessor.  He spoke with the manager of the American Thrift Store – the store is closed on Sundays and the manager is all for the region to use the site for the Solo program.

Gerald is still trying to contact Bobby Chazen, one of the owners of the Old Wheland Foundry property.

 6)         Road Rally:  It was decided to take the following off the schedule:

September 17, 2005

RoadRally

Divisional Road Rally - Chattanooga

            Rusty White
            Bill Perry – SOM

There will be three events August 6 and 7, 2005:

Daytona International Speedway’s Double SARRC
            VIR Oak Tree Nationals
            CMP Time Trials

Carolina Motorsports Park will hold a Double SARRC on August 13 and 14, 2005

Atlanta Motor Speedway – Double SARRC / Pro IT on September 3-5, 2005

 8)         Old Business:  None.

9)         New Business:

·        Gerald Street suggested a $5.00 refundable deposit paid by each racer at the Solo events.  If the racer stayed to help clean up, the $ would be refunded.  After discussion, we were reminded that Travis Fitzgerald had a system set up for workers to be assigned cleanup as their worker assignments, as well as the Doblers would hold trophy presentations until cleanup was complete.  This tended to get people to help.

7)         Road Racing:  Art Thompson gave the following:

Carolina Motorsports Park was on May 28-30 with Anthony Henderson and Efren Ormaza representing our region.  Anthony in his Caracal “C” FV was 6/6 on Saturday and 2/6 on Sunday.  Efren DNS – broken dist. drive in practice – but his one practice lap “it was like a dream!”

 Riding for St. Jude

The Chattanooga Region SCCA equipment was put to good use recently. The First United Methodist Church of Cleveland’s Child Development Center put on a trike-a-thon on April 5. The SCCA equipment was there along with Mike Strawbridge, riding safety instructor and SCCA member. The trike-a-thon battles two problems facing children – riding accidents and childhood cancer. Mike gave the children some instruction on riding safety and the children rode laps to collect money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

5) RallyCross Site Search: David Brooks has worker positions filled. The event is on Graysville Mountain with a cost of $30 which will include lunch. David is in charge of making sure the trailer is ready for the event.

The Region needs an older computer to use for timing & scoring. Carl is loaning one for the next event but we need a permanent CPU. Ruthie may have what is needed.

SCCA Chattanooga Region
Minutes from February 8, 2005 Meeting

Present: 16 members and visitors.

BUSINESS:

1) There were no Minutes as the last meeting was the Christmas Party in January. Pictures and awards information is available on the website.

2) Treasurer’s Report. Gerald indicated the Treasurer’s Report is incorrect. The correct Beginning checking balance is $4,969.47, the corrected Checkbook Balance is $4,669.47 and Total Cash Available is $4,729.47. Art stated a few bills were due and after payment would reduce the funds available to approximately $4,000.00, but this would be reflected on February 05’s Treasurer’s Report.

Gerald Street moved the Treasurer’s Report be accepted, Steve Tompkins seconded and the Motion was approved.

3) Points Keepers:

Solo I Steve Tompkins
Solo II Travis Fitzgerald
Road Rally Mike Strawberry
Road Race Art Thompson
RallyCross David Brooks

4) Solo II Site Search: The Home Depot site is not an option. Gerald Street will check on the possibility of using the lot by the new Emissions Testing Center. Linda Hester will give Chattanooga State another go-around.

5) RallyCross Site Search: David Brooks said the ad in the Sequatchie Valley Paper actually brought in many responses. A site has been chosen – 8 acres with elevation changes approximately 5 miles of I27. Carl will put the directions on the website. The RallyCross is set for March 12.

Gerald advised the new Sanction Audit Form indicates increases in fees. The new sanction fee is $3.50 per driver unless the Region sends electronically the member and non-members names within a reasonable period of time after the event. The insurance fee is now $4.50 per driver.

6) SCCA Safety Symposium: The Region received a DVD titled 2004 SCCA Safety Symposium. It has 4 ½ - 5 hours of material and can be purchased for $30.00. It was decided to pass the DVD around to interested parties for viewing.

One item of concern is close-faced helmets. All helmets must be open-face helmets unless the car’s airbags are disengaged.

7) Old Business: a letter was received from Efren Ormaza, owner of Terra Nostra, expressing concern and apology that so many people became ill after the party. He had the dressings tested which were negative and offered the official results. Also included in the letter were five gift certificates for the restaurant.

It should be made very clear the sickness was not from the food, but a highly contagious flu that is still making the rounds.

8) New Business: Bill Perry proposed a Track Trials Event at Nashville Superspeedway on October 22 and 23, 2005. The event has passed Safety Inspection, received a date from SEDIV, the track verbally accepted a reduced rate for track rental, and the Tennessee Region has given written permission required by SCCA for our Region to do an event in their area.

After discussion of what would be involved and necessary, Bill Perry moved a two-part motion:

  • Authorization to spend the $500.00 deposit, $2,700 remainder 15 days prior to the event and the balance the Sunday of the event; and

  • Authorization to negotiate the contract from the Nashville SuperSpeedway.

Motion seconded by Chuck Fullgraf and unanimously approved.

9) Date and location of next meeting: Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Komatsu.

SPORTING:

  • Solo I & II: Steve gave Art and Ruthie their trophies from the awards banquet at Jekyll Island in January.

  • Road Rally update was given by Mike Strawbridge of the SnowDrift event. Most notable was the temp – a whopping MINUS 16 degrees!

  • RallyCross – will be held in Huntsville on the 12th – Carl will have the info on the website.

  • Road Race – annual tech day saw 13 cars – all of whom passed. Of course, the issue of the Hester car and who played with it went unresolved…….

  • Rolex 24 report – Dave Hester had a good time working the race. Said there were a good turnout of cars (63 entered, 62 started) and a good cross-over of drivers.

Art mentioned the Drivers School coming up in Savannah where the following Region members will participate:

• Chuck Fullgraf – student
• Art Thompson & Ruthie Cartridge – crew
• Bill Perry – steward

Also mentioned is the Road Race at Road Atlanta on February 26 and 27.

SEDiv Annual Meeting
Jekyll Island - January 21-23, 2005

Six members of the Chattanooga Region attended the Southeast Division Annual Meeting at Jekyll Island on January 21, 22 and 23, led by RE Gerald Street. Also attending were Solo I Steward, Steve Tompkins, Bill and Gail Perry, Will Perry and Jamie Hamilton. Saturday was a jammed day of activities starting at 7:45 AM. Meetings included general activities, Solo I, Solo II, RallyCross, Race Tech, Stewards, SARRC, Endurance Championship Racing, and specialty worker sessions. We certainly needed more people there to cover all the sessions of interest to us. But we learned a lot at each of the meetings we were able to attend. RallyCross got a surprising amount of attention at this meeting, with two one hour sessions dedicated to that activity, but all our sports were well covered. SCCA CEO Steven Johnson, Howard Duncan and two others from the Topeka office participated. The four hour long Annual Awards Meeting, which began at 8 PM was attended by hundreds of SCCA people. Our Area 12 BOD rep for the past six years, Phil Mellor, won two prestigious awards for his service to the Division. See our feature "Heroes in Road Racing" for more information on Phil. Our own Steve Tompkins received the Solo I Hall of Fame Award presented by Cool Shirt. Bob Forsten of Dayton, Tn. (better known at the track as Capt. Bob) was one of two people who won a $500 cash award as a loyal SCCA race worker.

In the door prize drawing, Jamie Hamilton and Gail Perry both won free race entries, to Central Carolina Region and Florida Region races respectively. I think they may be taking offers for the valuable certificates.

Will PerryChattanooga Region members received many awards, but far fewer were there to receive them than last year. Will Perry was there to receive his award for first place in ITC for SARRC. Ken Walker also was there for his first place award for G Production in SARRC. Their SARRC trophies were accompanied by a tote bag of goodies - jacket, several shirts, hats, etc. Will also got the first place award for Group 2 Performance Co Driver. Steve Tompkins got his first place trophy for Formula Mazda, Solo I, and awarded the trophies to the other Solo I winners. He did an excellent job of presenting for his program.

Members not there to receive their awards were:
Dave Hester, 6th in American Sedan, SARRC
Vesa Silegren, 5th, ITC, SARRC
Jeanne Darrow, 1st, C Stock Ladies, Solo II
Art Thompson, 3rd, Spec Miata, Solo I
Ruthie Cartlidge, 4th, Spec Miata, Solo I
Randy Bailey, 1st, Group 2 Driver, ClubRally
Mike Strawbridge, 1st, Production GT Driver, ClubRally
Josh Aslinger, 1st, Production GT CoDriver, ClubRally

As is our Region's custom, we took all the trophies we had to accept for the people who weren't there and threw them in the ocean! (not really, it was too cold and windy to go on the beach on Sunday morning. You lucked out it wasn't beautiful and warm like Saturday).

Gerald Street represented us as a Director of the Southeast Division in the Sunday meeting of Directors and Division Administrators. They voted on some competition rules for the Division (example, Spec Miata tire rule for SEDIV will be the same as National, any DOT tire). They voted to furnish $5000 to assist the Tennessee Valley Region in getting Crow Mountain Hillclimb off the ground. They voted $1000 to Steve to get wireless timing for Solo I in addition to other appropriations. Voted down was a proposal to give $16,000 of SEDIV money to general charities. Our directors thought support of SEDIV programs was a priority and that individual regions could handle charity as they saw fit. The Directors made the 2005 Competition Schedule official. It includes a Solo I by the Chattanooga Region at the Nashville Superspeedway. More on this item later.

-- Bill Perry
