The oval at Charlotte favored horsepower this weekend. Sunday's races got going late, due to lots of clean-up on the track, and problems with timing and scoring. The infield seemed to give many drivers problems, leading to the demise of a Miata, two Rx-7's, and one Baby Grand. The Chattanooga contingent fared well, with Dwight Floyd pulling 4th out of 7 in SPU and Kenn Walker, placing 2nd out of 5 in FP. Art Thompson, outgunned by a Sirocco and late-model Civic in the ECR, ran a great race for 3rd place against Mark Senior. Art was gridded behind Mark, but managed to pull ahead of him about half way through the race. Mark pulled back in front, but Art was threatening to take back the lead again as the enduro came to a close. The Senior/Thompson race was the highlight of the ECR. In the heat of battle, Art called in to his crew chief, Chuck Fulgraf: "this is hard work!" (Fun, too.) John Fine, Art's primary competition for ECR points, wasn't a real
factor in the race, due to timing problems and losing a lap to a meatball
on the green flag (open rear hatch). |

The track was a lot more fun than anticipated from a NASCAR oval. The Sunday races even drew about 20 or 30 spectators, all dwarfed by the immense bleachers at Lowe's. Saturday night sleeping in the paddock was interrupted twice, by panic alarms going off in the facility. Overall, though, the track was fun, and everyone had a great time. -- Ruthie Cartlidge
