Spring Tour Rally RoadRally

May 19, 2002 -- Atlanta, GA

I took Scott to be my navigator in his first ever road rally. We ran Robert Harvey's Spring tour Rally in Atlanta. It was a nice event run on the backroads north of Cumming. Scott did pretty well once he got the hang of the computer. He managed to miss the first big speed change going from 45 to 20 and I had to drive seat of the pants to the control but we got only 6 points. I then pointed to the wrong number on the computer for him to write down at the first DIYC. That cost us over 100 points. We finally got things together after lunch and scored a zero after adjusting our odo factor. The exciting thing about that leg was that somehow when we pulled off in some tall grass to let car 7 get back in front of us, we picked up a noise in of the left rear wheel. It made a loud click once per revolution. Knowing that a control was nearby and we were perfectly on time, I refused to stop to see what the noise was. I figured what ever it was we could fix later. Entering the control, a large crowd gathered to see what was wrong with the Talon as I ran back to see our score. Happy with the zero, I went back to see what Scott had found.  He was dislodging a beer can form the wheel spokes that was causing the loud click each time it hit the brake caliper. He got a lot of ribbing at the rally end meeting about not throwing his beer cars far enough off the road. We took second place behind Tom Grieg and Marty Friedman
