Solo II "Test & Tune" Sometimes we get lucky in Chattanooga weatherwise. You may recall the event in 93 planned for the second Sunday in March. A bit of frozen stuff (24" of snow) caused us to cancel that event. February 25th goes down as a day when perfect weather conditions prevailed. Sharon and I arrived at 9:00 am to find two cars from Atlanta already in the paddock. These folks needed a speed fix! My apologies to all the starting late, but the first event of the year usually has a few kinks to work out. Thanks to Jim Hornady of the Southern British Car Club for his help with the PA and computer system. I had hoped everyone would get in at least four runs, but we could only squeeze in three. Eight cars from Atlanta and some from Knoxville came to work out the winter mods and cobwebs, and prepare for the national tour event in Moultrie, GA. Glad you could make it, and good luck. The course I set up favored lighter and more maneuverable carswe wont let that happen again! Gary Wiggins and Duane Dunham were testing a new rear suspension they had installed the night before. Duane was also working with Jim Murphy and his 440. Duane set FTD for the day in Jims car with a 1:04.741. Not far back was Jim himself, with a 1:05.647. Not bad considering the extra weight being carried. (That was meant kindly!) Eric Esch (C Stock Miata--1:10.191) and Ken Rupp (G Stock Firebird1:10.108) displayed their National level skills, proving to be the fastest stock class cars. Mark Pilson (DSP Scirocco1:08.878) has driven his car for several years and it is obvious by the times he is turning. That is one quick DSP car. Most of the times were closely grouped. I think the course layout had a lot to do with equalizing the competition. At least thats what I keep telling myself. A big welcome to Brian Walker, James Reynolds and Ben Gilley who tried their hand at autocrossing for the first time. Remember, we race on the 4th Sunday of the month at Eastgate Mall and we hope to see you there again! -- Tom Shirley '96 Solo II Results Reprinted from the DownShift, March 1996.
